October 2022 · Las Vegas, Nevada
An 18-year-old French kid plays two exhibition games on American TV against the G League Ignite. Game one: 37 points, 5 blocks, seven 3-pointers. Game two: 36 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks in a win.
LeBron James is in the building. Asked about the kid afterward, he delivers the line that becomes the nickname:
"Everybody's been a unicorn over the last few years, but he's more like an alien. No one has ever seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is out on the floor." — LeBron James, October 5, 2022

2023-24 Panini Prizm #136 — Black Finite 1/1 (PSA 10)
The most expensive Wembanyama card ever sold — and the most expensive non-autographed NBA card ever sold. It moved in a private sale brokered by Fanatics Collect, making it the 4th-highest publicly known NBA card sale and the 11th-highest sports card sale of all time.
The card was pulled by collector Cavelle McDonald from a box at NorCal Sports Cards. It came from the Prizm #136 rookie — the hobby's benchmark Wemby card, the one every collector knows.

◈ True rookie cards
All licensed Wemby rookies are 2023-24 Panini: Prizm #136 (the benchmark), Select (Concourse/Premier/Courtside tiers), Donruss Rated Rookie and Donruss Optic, NBA Hoops, Mosaic, Revolution, Contenders, plus Prizm Draft Picks (college uniform) and retail spin-offs like Prizm Monopoly and Prizm Deca.
◈ What drives value
Serial-numbered parallels and 1/1s rule the top end — Black Finite, Nebula, Gold /10s, King Snake. Autographs carry a premium because no Panini-licensed Wemby autos exist; his signature is exclusive to Topps/Fanatics. Grading matters enormously: a base Prizm PSA 10 trades at roughly 5× a raw copy. PSA's pop report is the industry's rarity standard.
◈ Spotting fakes
In April 2024 U.S. Customs seized counterfeit Prizm #136 rookies. Tells on fakes: weak print, blurred photo, a "cut" Nike swoosh, "SPURS" nameplate not bold, missing nameplate shadow. Always verify the cert number with PSA/BGS/SGC on expensive cards, and treat far-below-market prices as a red flag.
◈ Where to buy & trade
eBay has the most liquidity — use Authenticity Guarantee on big purchases. Auction houses: Goldin, PWCC, Fanatics Collect, ALT. Breaks on Whatnot, local card shops, The National show, plus COMC and MySlabs for fixed-price deals.
◈ Panini vs. Topps
Panini held the NBA license during Wemby's rookie year — so every true licensed rookie is Panini. In October 2025 Fanatics took over the license, making Topps the NBA licensee (2025-26 Topps Chrome Cosmic is the first licensed Topps NBA product). Wemby's autograph is exclusive to Fanatics/Topps — that's why Topps, not Panini, issues his certified autos.
